Elements of Folklore: An Introduction

We will be revisiting learned literary devices in an attempt to understand how writers use them to express their ideas and enhance their writing. Literary devices highlight important concepts in a text, strengthen the narrative, and help readers connect to the characters and themes. Let’s begin….

Lit. Unit: The Folktale. (8/14-8/26)

Students, by reading & analyzing tales from the world over, we will learn to:

* Determine the theme & analyze its development over the course of the tale

* Analyze how particular elements of a story interact (i.e., how the setting shapes the characters or plot)

* Analyze how the author develops the point of view of different characters.

Students, herein, we will be discussing the elements of a folktale, revisiting & reviewing literary terms, all with an emphasis on understanding the theme, elements of a plot & the use of symbols in writing. You will also learn to decipher static & dynamic characters. Doing so will help you hone/ develop your ability to recognize & understand literary terms as they appear in all your readings.

Unit I Chapter I: The Roman Empire and Christianity

We will begin by revisiting concepts learned in sixth grade. We will, then, venture forth to appreciate the legacy of Rome & culminate the unit with a discussion on the downfall of Rome.

Students, herein, you will

* Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome (e.g. significance of Roman citizenship; rights under Roman law; Roman art; architecture, engineering, and philosophy; preservation and transmission of Christianity) and its ultimate internal weaknesses (e.g. rise of autonomous military powers within the empire, undermining of citizenship by the growth of corruption and slavery, lack of education, and distribution of news)

* Discuss the geographic borders of the empire at its height and the factors that threatened its territorial cohesion

Welcome back to another great school year!

Dear Students, 

This year, like many others, is certain to bring with it many new and exciting experiences. The emphasis in our class this year will be to continue building on content knowledge with a greater focus on informational texts & primary sources. I will endeavor to help you hone and augment your academic vocabulary and build on grammar fundamentals. Our enriched Language Arts and History course aligns with CCSS and includes additional readings with increased complexity. This is designed to excite & challenge you to imbibe all that our textbook adoption (Study Sync) has to offer. Students also know that debates, role-playing, thought experiments, & games (time permitting) will be a regular part of your classes. I look forward to teaching all of you!
